Weathering with You, an anime film by director Makoto Shinkai, has already made more than 10 billion yen (about P5 billion) at the Japanese box office since its release in July. It is Shinkai’s first movie after another box-office hit, Your Name.

Weathering with You is already in the top 10 highest-grossing domestically produced films in Japan.

The anime film revolves in the life of teen runaway Hodaka and magical, weather-controlling Tokyo girl Hina. The story has resonated with audiences and critics who have been showering the rainy-days tale with praise.

Shinkai’s latest anime hit has an opportunity to add an Oscar recognition to its success. The movie is Japan’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category for the 92nd Academy Awards that will be held on February 2020. Entries for the category, which is a renaming of the previous Best Foreign Language Film award, must originate in a country other than the U.S. and have the majority of their dialogue in a language other than English.

Apparently, the movie’s nomination is quite significant due to the following reasons:

  • Even if Your Name is considered a big hit, it didn’t get an Oscar nomination
  • It has taken three years for Shinkai’s talent to get recognized
  • Weathering with You is only the second anime movie to be submitted for the Best International Film/Best Foreign Language Film category (the other one is Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke) and the first in over 20 years

Right now, being nominated for an Oscar is quite big. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next.
