WATCH: Restaurant black light experiment shows how quickly virus spreads

Oftentimes, we forget how quickly infections can spread especially when they seem to be invisible.

Due to this, the Japanese broadcasting network NHK shared a video on May 8 that showed how germs or viruses can easily spread in a room full of people even if there was initially just one person infected. The purpose of the experiment is to simulate an area similar to a buffet restaurant or a cruise ship. These scenarios were considered the easiest ways to spread COVID-19 between people at the onset of the pandemic.

NHK partnered with health experts to demonstrate how germs or viruses can be transmitted easily from one person to another.

Aside from demonstrating this, the experiment was conducted to help experts from Kawasaki’s St. Marianna University School of Medicine.

The experiment was conducted using 10 people eating in a buffet restaurant. At the start of the experiment, the researchers applied a fluorescent lotion on the hands of one of the people participating, who is considered to be the source of the infection.

The fluorescent lotion is invisible to the naked eye but appears under UV light. The lotion is used to simulate viral droplets from a cough.

Later on, the participants were allowed to dish up food from the buffet trays.

After 30 minutes, the black light was activated to reveal if the “infection” was spread. The participants looked shocked after seeing that the lotion is virtually everywhere. It was on the hands of every participant, plates, tongs, drink pitchers, and even on some people’s mouths.
