Horror movie fans, there’s a new film to watch out for. It’s called Mallari and it’s about the Philippines’ first-ever documented serial killer.

And oh, he was a priest.

Watch the trailer below:

Piolo Pascual plays the titular priest in his first horror film. He will be joined by JC Santos, Janella Salvador, Elisse Joson, Gloria Diaz, and Mylene Dizon.

It is directed by Derick Cabrido.

There’s no word when it will come out but according to Pascual’s Instagram post, it will play “soon in Philippine cinemas.”

Who is Father Mallari? (possible spoilers for the movie)

A series of mysterious deaths plagued the town of Magalang in Pampanga beginning in 1810.

This lasted around a decade, with around 50 strange deaths.

These murders were unexplained until Father Mallari, who was the first Filipino head of the parish of Pampanga, became ill and the townspeople visited his home. There, they discovered items covered in blood, which were tied to the string of murders.

Father Mallari was jailed in Manila for 14 years. In 1804, he became the first Filipino priest to be hanged.

In terms of motive, it was discovered that he believed that his mother was the victim of a mangkukulam or a witch. The priest believed that killing parishioners would reverse the magic done to his mother. It is said that he is responsible for at least 57 deaths during his time as head of the parish of Pampanga.

Singing, a quarterly publication based in Pampanga, reported that Mallari had severe psychosis.
