Several localities have already suspended classes next week after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the first case of local transmission of the novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19.

Here are the places were classes have already been called off:

Metro Manila

  • Marikina City – All levels, public and private (until Wednesday, March 11, 2020)
  • Navotas City – All levels, public and private (No classes on Monday, March 9)
  • Pasay City – All levels, public and private (until Tuesday, March 10, 2020)
  • San Juan City – All levels, public and private (No classes on Monday, March 9)
  • Quezon City – Bagong Lipunan Crame Elementary School & High School (No classes on Monday, March 9)

Calabarzon

  • Cainta, Rizal – All levels, public and private (No classes until Tuesday, March 10)
  • Taytay, Rizal – All levels, public and private (No classes on Monday, March 9)

According to the DOH, the first local case was a resident of Cainta. They also announced that his 59-year-old wife is positive of the virus, which made her the sixth confirmed COVID-19 patient and the second case of local transmission. The two are confined in the Research Tropical Institute for Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said that there is still no need to lock down schools unless there is a “sustained community transmission” or “an increasing number of local cases whose links cannot be established.”
