The Biosciences Quiz Bee is the flagship event of the UP MBBS. The event seeks to spark enthusiasm in the Filipino youth in various fields of science and technology and to bring the field of molecular biology and biotechnology (MBB) into the spotlight. This year’s event is themed “Treading New Pathways.” The quiz bee proper will challenge students’ theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills in MBB, chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and earth science. The winner of the quiz bee will receive medals, certificates, and a cash prize of Php 12,000. First and second runners-up will also receive medals, certificates, and cash prizes of Php 9,000 and Php 6,000, respectively.

Aside from the quiz bee, this event also aims to expand the horizons of high school students through its sub-events. These include a lecture on evolutionary genomics by Isaiah Paolo A. Lee, PhD, of the Evolutionary Genomics and Systematic Biology Lab of the NIMBB, and a workshop on protein docking by Samantha Joie Panday of the Protein Structure and Immunology Lab of the NIMBB. Participants will also be taken on a short walking tour of the National Science Complex to encourage high school students who are interested in pursuing the natural sciences in college.

Over 80 teams of students from all over the Philippines are registered to participate in this year’s event. These include students from Northern Luzon, Metro Manila, the Bicol region, and more. The UP MBBS is excited to host these teams and looks forward to helping further their appreciation and understanding of science, especially in the field of MBB.

Registration for the event has closed, but those interested in following the event are encouraged to follow the event’s Facebook page (facebook.com/BiosciQuizBee), as well as the organization’s Facebook page (facebook.com/UPMBBS) and Instagram page (@upmbbs).
