UP Exec Who Tweeted “Death by Community Pantry” Resigns

University of the Philippines’ executive vice president resigned today after receiving backlash on his remark on community pantries. Dr. Teodoro Herbosa expressed his opinion after a senior citizen who was waiting in line at a community pantry organized by actress Angel Locsin in Quezon City passed away. He wrote on Twitter:

Death by “Community Pantry”. I told you so!

The online flak prompted Dr. Herbosa to make a public apology. He wrote on Facebook:

I sincerely apologize for my tweet earlier today, tagging as “death by community pantry” news of a senior citizen’s death at a community pantry of a celebrity. It may have sounded like a criticism but was ill-judged when many are facing hardships & being helped by these kind-hearted souls.
He expressed his support for such acts of kindness. Even though he objects to violations of public health standards, he understood that he could have expressed it in a better way.
I support community pantries as acts of kindness. What I had intended to say was I object to violations of public health standards, which increase transmission of COVID-19. I suggested ways to do community pantries without risk to senior citizens. I felt angry over a preventable death, & ended up issuing the tweet when I could have expressed it in a better way.
Then, the former VP detached his opinion from the institution and filed a leave of absence.
I apologize to sincere organizers of community pantries who were hurt. I continue to reflect on the impact of my behavior. I assure you this has nothing to do with the institution that I serve, the University of the Philippines, I have filed a leave of absence while I reflect on my actions & this misstep.

Today, Dr. Herbosa has tendered his immediate resignation due to “personal reasons” which has been accepted by UP President Danilo Concepcion. Dr. Herbosa served as UP’s Executive VP since the beginning of Concepcion’s administration in 2017.
