“There have been many courses about Taylor Swift in universities abroad and I think there hasn’t been one in the Philippines yet,” Brillon said. Considering that the country is “a Taylor Swift nation,” she expressed that it’s “a bit surprising.” Thus, the self-confessed Swiftie and UP professor thinks “it’s time for us here in the Philippines to look at her in an in-depth manner.”

In other countries, Brillon noted that Taylor Swift courses are mostly literary, focusing on her songwriting; while others delve into her pop star status, exploring a more business-oriented perspective. Stanford University, New York University, Harvard University, University of Texas, and Belgium’s Ghent University are among those who offer Taylor Swift courses.

UP’s Taylor Swift course, on the other hand, will be focusing on “the conception, construction, and performance of Taylor Swift as a celebrity and how she can be used to explain our and, of course, media’s relationship with class, politics, gender, race, and fantasies of success and mobility,” Brillon told PhilSTAR L!fe. This elective will be taught it in the second semester of A.Y. 2023–2024.
