“Tom and Jerry” and “Popeye” director dies at 95

Oscar-winning director, filmmaker, and animator Gene Deitch dies at the age of 95. Deitch is best known for directing the cartoon classics Tom and Jerry and Popeye.

According to reports, the director passed away last Thursday in his apartment in Prague’s Little Quarter. No other further details were given about his passing.

Deitch has directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry for MGM between 1961 to 1962. Between 1960 and 1963, he also directed a few episodes for Popeye. His animated short Munro also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960. Deitch also received nominations for the same category twice in 1964 for Here’s Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship.

Fans of the late director and filmmaker have also reacted to Deitch’s death by posting heartwarming messages online. Deitch is survived by his wife and by three sons from his first marriage. They are also illustrators and cartoonists.
