Back when she was still single, Karlin Magtibay dreamed of traveling. She renewed her passport two or three times, with each renewal carrying the hope that it might finally receive its first stamp.
Travel was only one of the dreams she held onto. After getting married and starting a family, Karlin created a dream board filled with aspirations for the future: a home of their own, a car parked in the driveway, trips abroad, and a life where her children could pursue their dreams without financial worries. At the time, those goals felt far away.
Her husband worked as a seafarer, but periods between assignments meant income was not always consistent. To help support the family, Karlin took on part-time work and sold various products while raising their children.
For years, she kept her dream board as a reminder of what she was working toward. “Mahilig kasi ako gumawa ng dream board,” she shared. “Sabi ko 5 to 10 years from now, dapat may car ako, may travel na kami. Pinaka-priority namin ‘yung bahay.”
From dream board to dream life
Then Karlin discovered financial advisory through AXA.
Financial advisory was never part of her plans. It was her aunt who encouraged her to explore an opportunity with AXA after seeing the financial challenges their family faced. Though the idea felt unfamiliar, Karlin decided to give it a chance.
What started as a way to create a more secure future for her own family became something much bigger.
Motivated by the future she wanted to build, Karlin committed herself to learning the profession. She attended training sessions, met clients, and steadily developed the discipline needed to pursue her goals. Balancing work and motherhood was not always easy. There were times she brought her children with her to the office. What helped her persevere was the support she found among fellow financial advisors and leaders.
Karlin added, “Hindi ka naman pwedeng magtrabaho mag-isa lang. So talagang kailangan mo ng support system.”
That support gave her the confidence to keep moving forward. Over time, the dreams that once existed only on her vision board gradually became reality. “Kaya sobrang thankful ko kay AXA kasi lahat ng first, dito talaga,” she said. “First na makasakay ng eroplano, first na matatakan yung aking passport. At first time ko din na makahawak ng sasakyan, manibela.”
Through the years, she was able to travel to Australia, Korea and Japan, bring her children to Hong Kong, support their education, help her family in Mindoro during the pandemic, purchase a car, and eventually build the home she had long dreamed of.
“’Yung makuha ko rin dito yung dream house ko,” Karlin said, “hanggang ngayon, hindi ko [pa rin] ma-imagine na mangyayari sa akin.”
Her story reflects the spirit of AXA Philippines’ Everyday Protectors campaign, which celebrates people who work every day to care for those who depend on them. For Karlin, that journey began with her own family.
From a mother’s dream to a bigger purpose
As her family’s situation became more secure, Karlin discovered a deeper purpose in her work.
Every client she met was protecting someone, too. They were parents, breadwinners, caregivers, and family members working toward their own dreams while carrying responsibilities for others. Her role was to help them prepare for uncertainties so the people they love would remain protected when life took an unexpected turn.
The impact of that work became most meaningful when clients experienced the value of the protection they once hesitated to secure.
Among the moments she treasures most are the messages she receives from clients after a successful claim. “Karlin, thank you talaga. Kinausap mo ko, ineducate mo ko, tinulungan mo ko na tama pala, na dapat noon pa lang, sinimulan na natin maging [financially] disciplined.”
For Karlin, those moments are proof that a single conversation can make a lasting difference. “Hindi natin alam kung ano ‘yung pwedeng mangyari sa atin bukas o sa ibang araw,” she said. “Talagang malaking tulong sa mga families na napa-claims ko dahil lang sa isang desisyon na ginawa nila.”
That perspective has shaped how she views her work, not simply as a career, but as an opportunity to help families make informed decisions for the future.
Her journey has also influenced the message she shares with other mothers, wives, and women who may feel limited by their circumstances. “Kasi sabi ko nga, minsan akala natin bilang mga moms, pang bahay lang tayo,” she said. “Minsan nagwo-work tayo, nagpa-part-time, akala natin parang pang-doon na lang tayo. Hindi pala.”
For Karlin, motherhood was never the end of her own aspirations—it became part of the reason she pursued them. Today, she continues to build a better future for her own family while helping other families prepare for theirs. In both roles, she embodies what it means to be an Everyday Protector: someone who cares for the people who depend on her, while showing that being a mother does not mean putting her own dreams aside.
Her journey is a reminder that women can continue to grow, build, and dream while caring for the people they love and, in doing so, help others find the confidence to pursue their own futures.
