This is What the Cast of Fantastic Beasts Were Doing When the Last Harry Potter Movie Came Out

The last Harry Potter film (The Deathly Hollows Part 2) came out in 2011, signaling an end of an era for many ’90s kids. For them, they grew up with the books, and later the movies, and the last film left them wondering what their next fandom is going to be. Fortunately, Harry Potter author JK Rowling published the website Pottermore and wrote more books. Now, we have the film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a spinoff off  the franchise!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a guidebook on magical creatures, written by Newt Scamander and featured in the Harry Potter universe. The film follows Scamander as he meets the Magical Congress of the United States of America. The creatures in his suitcase escapes, and he must gather them all before magic and Muggle relations strain further.

It stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Ron Perlman, and Jon Voight. They were not part of any of the Harry Potter films, so we decided to investigate what they were doing when Deathly Hollows Part 2 came out. Here’s what we found:

Eddie Redmayne, who will play Scamander, was in Hick, a comedy-drama with Blake Lively and Chloë Grace Moretz. He also did My Week with Marilyn, a drama film where he played a man who spent a week with Marilyn Monroe during the production of a film. Here he is posing for a shoot for Glamour magazine.

Katherine Waterston, who will play Tina Goldstein, may be relatively new to mainstream audiences, but she has been busy. In 2011, she appeared in Enter Nowhere, a psychological thriller. After Fantastic Beasts, she will be in Alien: Covenant.

Dan Fogler, who will play Jacob Kowalski, had three movies in 2011: Crocodile Tears, Take Me Home Tonight, and Mars Needs Moms. His 2016 is packed, too. Besides Fantastic Beasts, he’s doing Sex Guaranteed, Making the Day, and Custody

Alison Sudol, who will play Queenie Goldstein, was busy with her recording career in 2011. Her musical act A Fine Frenzy was part of the soundtrack of Monte Carlo (starring Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester) and New Year’s Eve (the star-studded New Year version of Love Actually). She was probably also recording for her album Pines, which came out the following year
