Top 13 Commercials of 2013: LCJS (Last Commercial Jingle Syndrome) of the Year

6. “Mag- gatas a day para tibay everyday!” – Bear Brand

A Youtube commenter from this video said that a particular Rihanna song really reminds him of the ad’s jingle. Well, that’s a peculiar comparison. I must say, though, that the composer really did a good job on this campaign. Don’t you wanna drink milk a day, para tibay everyday now?

5.  “May Emperador Light na naghihintay, gawin nating light ang buhay!” – Emperador

This, I really enjoyed the whole lyrics! “Para sa mga hindi nauubos ang trabaho, sa mga tatlong oras kung magpagwapo!”; “Para sa mga laging rason ang traffic, at sa mga biglang nalipat sa night shift”, then comes “May Emperador Light na naghihintay…”. I mean, yeah, it may not console the non-drinkers, but the whole thought of the song does make rant days a little lighter, right?

4. “Lonely is the night when I’m not with you” – Imodium

This is one funny ad that reminded me of an international Mcdonald’s commercial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_-Z_k6H90A) with Meatloaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love” instead. The Imodium ending came unexpected as it introduced a melodramatic scene with an appealing cover of an Air Supply love song.

3. “So, go downtown, things will be great when you’re downtown!” – McDonalds

Beautiful curly hair, quaint room, Petula Clark’s Downtown song and a grandma – granddaughter duet, McDonald’s never fails to produce affectionate ads mostly promoting family values. The ad is SO charming, with Marita Zobel and her very cute little version Jana Agoncillo (now part of Honesto), singing “Downtown” complete with trinkets and endearing gestures.

2. “To the left, to the right, umikot ng sabay-sabay! Bye bye suklay do the Palmolive finger comb!” – Palmolive

Lyrics on screen, full music video, and choreographed dance steps; Palmolive Naturals’ No Comb Revo ad bombarded our TV screens for how many months! Janella Salvador surely got good exposure being the latest “Palmolive Girl”. Why do these shampoo commercials love to teach us random perky dance steps and uncontrollably catchy lyrics?

  1. “Pinalaki… nang pinalaki oh oh! Pinakamalaki oh oh!” – Surf

I bet you remembered this jingle the moment you read the title… or maybe not. But Surf’s “Pinakamalaki” commercial amusingly left an LCJS for lots of people, including me! The melody is catchy and convincing enough to make you imagine just how BIG the new Surf Fabric Conditioner is! The ad jingle went so viral that Tom Hiddleston’s character Loki even became a casualty meme:

Last Commercial Jingle Syndrome

I apologize as early as now if I caused you any major LCJS from the commercial jingles listed above; but hey, it’s actually funny when you catch yourself singing one of them, right? So, better enjoy the last few moments of 2013’s LCJS When in Manila and brace yourselves for another year of catchy jingles and successful advertisements!
