If you’ve been feeling a bit of a void in your life since The Handmaid’s Tale ended, prepare to have it filled with something just as gripping. The long-awaited sequel series, The Testaments, has finally made its debut on Disney+, and it is every bit the powerhouse I hoped it would be.
This isn’t just a “Part 2”. It’s a total evolution. The Testaments Season 1 (yes, they have already been renewed for Season 2!) shifts the lens to a new generation – the Gen Z of Gilead, if you will – providing a perspective that is as fresh as it is haunting.
Why The Testaments Season 1 is a Must-Watch

A Masterclass in Casting
One of the most impressive feats of this production is how it bridges the gap between the familiar and the new. Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia, and quite frankly, the screen practically crackles when she’s on it. Ann has always been the secret sauce of this universe, in my opinion, but here, we see a more complex, layered version of her character that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew.

The series also introduces us to Chase Infiniti as Agnes and Lucy Halliday as Daisy whose performances are nothing short of revelatory. They capture that specific, raw vulnerability of youth while displaying a grit that makes it impossible to look away. Rowan Blanchard, a personal favorite of mine, joins the cast as Shunammite, bringing a bit of “mean girl” energy to Gilead that adds a fascinating, almost high-school-drama layer to the high-stakes world.
A Visual Feast
In terms of cinematography, it has slightly shifted from the claustrophobic reds of the previous series to something more expansive yet equally tense. It feels like a coming-of-age thriller wrapped in a dystopian blanket.

The pacing is relentless as well. Unlike its predecessor, which often took its time with atmospheric dread, The Testaments Season 1 moves with a sense of urgency. It’s a mystery, a spy thriller, and a family drama all rolled into one. You’ll find yourself clicking “Next Episode” before the credits even have a chance to roll.
Powerful Messages
In today’s fast-paced, often overwhelming world, The Testaments Season 1 serves as a profound meditation on the power of truth. Beyond any specific real-world parallels, the show is ultimately about the strength of each individual. It highlights how even in the most rigid systems, a single person’s choice to seek the truth can have a ripple effect.
By following young women who have only ever known one way of life, the show also challenges us to think about how we form our own beliefs and where our truth actually comes from.

At its core, The Testaments Season 1 is a story about sisters, mothers, and friends. It reminds us that no matter how divided a world might seem, the desire for connection and family is a universal human constant.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Margaret Atwood’s books or are just looking for the next show that will have everyone talking, The Testaments Season 1 is a must-watch. It’s smart, it’s beautiful, and it’s a testament (pun intended) to how great television can still be.
