“The Search for the Ideal Education Personality: Truly Asia”

The aim of education is not simply transmission of knowledge but enculturation. In the College of Education, we would want to promote the culture of excellence. As such, our college would like to organize and implement activities that would contribute to the holistic development of the students. Moreover, in view of globalization, we would like to promote in the College awareness and respect for the culture of other countries. This is an important advocacy considering that UST is becoming a “global” university as evidenced by the significant number of foreign students enrolled in various academic programs. Not only this, we see events promoting the cultures that is differenet from the ones that we are used to shows that UST Education students have a great deal of respect at the same time exemplifies the three core values of the Thomasian as someone whose committed, compassionate and competent.

This year’s The Search for the Ideal Education Personality (TSIEP) focuses on the rich and robust culture of Malaysia. The College of Education Student Council, in partnership with the Embassy of Malaysia aims to promote the culture of the South-East Asian nation as an avenue to showcase that Malaysia truly is, Asia.

The pre-pageant was held last November 15, 2012 at the Medicine auditorium of the University. Students of different programs in the College will try to represent Education in the upcoming search for the Ideal Thomasian personality. The event kicked off with the 9 pair of candidates each representing a national symbol of Malaysia, to name a few, the national fruit, papaya, their national mosque and the Emblem of the country. Each pair was tasked to strut these symbols through their costume. Next stop was the talent portion where though some candidates opted to perform solo; there were also contestants who performed as a pair. A few standouts were Philip Sinlao, third year Social Studies Major, who did a tableau, with the same concept as that of Ramon Bautista’s “Tales from the Friend Zone”. Marjorie Suarez, a Library and Information Science student did choreography of Beyonce’s songs. Another unique talent was that of Theresa Angeles, a third year Pre-school Education student, who danced a sun danced complete with the costume and picturesque ambiance. The reigning Ms. Education Personality, Ms. Fiona Madrigal, also dropped by to share her nuggets of wisdom to the aspiring Kings and Queens.

The coronation night will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Medicine Auditorium where the champions will not only represent the College of Education in the upcoming UST Pageant, but also be deemed titlist as the “King and Queen of Kuala Lumpur”.
