When in Manila make sure to check out the latest installment of super hero movies, The Avengers. This craze is not only sweeping Pinoy, but it’s been spreading in the States as well. Though luckily the release date here is over a week ahead of the US!
As an ex-comicbook nerd, I can tell you without a doubt that this movie was phenomenal! From the pacing, the character development, the story telling and the blindingly epic action scenes, this will be the movie of the summer (unless of course The Dark Knight Rises steals it).
If for some reason you have been living under a rock and don’t know what The Avengers are about, well, start learning. The superheroes of Earth’s Greatest Heroes comes from Marvel’s comic book world, with the 6 starting members of the team being Captain America, Ironman, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Bruce Banner (or is it Hulk?), and Thor.
The movie is an end-of-the-world, good guys vs. bad guys showdown against Loki and his fallen army. Loki is obsessed with the idea of ruling Earth, and won’t stop until all mankind is kneeling before him. Luckily Nick Fury of the super secret S.H.I.E.L.D. force still has a trick up his sleeve–The Avengers Initiative! After assembling the team and dealing with their Type A personalities (amidst tons of awesome fighting) they finally band together to become one of the world’s best fighting forces. There’s even a sneak peek scene at the end of The Avengers movie, but I won’t give away any spoilers. If you like comics, it’s a fun cliffhanger!
One of the best aspects about The Avengers movie in Manila is the humor. Yes, I thought that they might try to overdo it, but Joss Whedon (known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series) has outdone himself. The dialogue between characters is witty, engaging and at some points outright hilarious. Even Hulk has his funny moments despite his nonverbal mannerisms. The Avengers had the audience laughing in fits when we weren’t all sitting on the edge of our seats holding our breath.
Even if you’ve never seen a superhero movie or you don’t love Robert Downey Jr. and the gorgeous Scarlett Johansson (why you wouldn’t, I don’t know) see this movie!
When in Manila check out the Avengers Assembling for their first debut as a team on the silver screen.
