The 1975 Press Con: “Don’t Take Advice From Bands”

The 1975 Press Con: “Don’t Take Advice From Bands”

When In Manila and you hear a thick Manchester accent over the radio, it might be the 1975 singing some of their hits “Girls” and “Chocolate”.

1975 is here in the country for a series of live performances at selected Ayala Malls right now, and When In Manila was present for the UK band’s press con at Fairmont Hotel.

The 1975 is composed of former schoolmates Matthew Healy (vocals / guitar), Ross MacDonald (bass), Adam Hann (guitar) and George Daniel (drums). At the press con hosted by Chino Lui Pio, the press and some lucky big fans had the opportunity to ask the four-piece band some questions.

1975 revealed some of their manifold influences from Boyz II Men to  Michael Jackson to Talking Heads and even – wait for it – Ashanti. How cool is that?

The 1975 Press Con – Their Favorite Song in the Album

Matty (Healy) chose their last song in the album, “Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You”, which he dedicates to his brother, while George half-jokingly answered “M.O.N.E.Y.”. But of course they all love their single “Chocolate”, which was voted number one at the Hottest Record of 2013 by BBC Radio 1 listeners.

Their Collaboration with One Direction

This is probably a much-asked question right now, so I’m glad they were finally able to clear things up. NO, they are not collaborating for a single with One Direction, although they will be writing for them. “We were asked to write a song for One Direction and we said yes”.

Their Advice for Aspiring Bands

“Don’t take advice from bands”. I had a good laugh in agreement when the 1975 vocalist said this. He gave good advice to just stay in school. He also mentioned that you don’t need a major label to make things happen; you just have to be good; and I nodded thinking, ‘This really makes sense’. “You just have to pursue things for happiness”, Matty added.

Meet the people behind @The1975PHTeam and @The1975_PHL

When asked about what has changed since the band’s popularity, they quickly answered that they remained the same people. However, for the question on what do they do during their free time: “We don’t have time off… when we do, we write songs for the band”.

I was impressed with how Matthew Healy, to be specific, handled the questions – and with that charming accent, of course!
