Mu Sigma Phi Sorority Launches Care2Care to Empower Informal Caregivers

The Mu Sigma Phi Sorority, the first duly recognized medical sorority in the Philippines and in Asia, celebrates its 92nd year of service with the launch of Care2Care: For The Ones Who Care, a caregiver empowerment program that shines a spotlight on the vital yet often overlooked role of informal caregivers in the healthcare system.

Founded on the pillars of Sisterhood, Service, Scholarship, and Leadership, the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority has long been committed to developing compassionate, competent, and socially responsive physicians in line with the vision and mission of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. As part of this tradition, each newly inducted batch spearheads an advocacy project that addresses a pressing community need while embodying the Sorority’s enduring commitment to service.

This year, Mu Sigma Phi Sorority Batch 2030 dedicates its advocacy to informal caregivers—family members, relatives, friends, and loved ones who provide unpaid care to individuals living with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or advanced age. While these caregivers play an indispensable role in supporting patients at home, many take on this responsibility with little formal training or support, often facing significant physical, emotional, and financial challenges in the process.

To help address these realities, Care2Care: For The Ones Who Care aims to equip caregivers with practical knowledge, essential caregiving skills, and resources that promote both quality patient care and caregiver well-being. The project also supports The Ruth Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of older adults and individuals with advanced illness through compassionate home-based care, palliative and hospice care education, and advocacy.

The one-day caregiver empowerment program, Care Camp, will be held on August 21, 2026, at the G Square Residences Event Hall along Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila. Participants will attend expert-led lectures covering common complications encountered by bedridden and chronically ill patients, strategies for preventing caregiver burnout, and approaches to maintaining mental and emotional wellness while providing long-term care. The program will feature Dr. Mel Caraan-Caraan Tiotangco, a board-certified general adult psychiatrist, and Dr. Agnes Cubillas-Torres, a Fellow of the Philippine College of Geriatric Medicine.

Complementing these discussions are interactive workshops on hospice and palliative care, where participants will receive hands-on training in patient handling and transfers, assisted feeding, personal hygiene, and other essential caregiving techniques. Health and wellness activities will likewise be conducted to encourage caregivers to care for themselves while continuing to care for others.

Beyond Care Camp, the initiative also seeks to engage the wider community through its CareSquares: A Care Challenge, an online campaign encouraging acts of kindness and appreciation for caregivers, as well as a fundraising raffle and donation drive that will help support the project’s activities and The Ruth Foundation’s programs for caregivers and their families.

Through Care2Care: For The Ones Who Care, the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority Batch 2030 hopes to recognize the invaluable contributions of informal caregivers while empowering them with the confidence, skills, and support they need to navigate the challenges of caregiving. More than a one-day event, the initiative reflects the Sorority’s enduring commitment to advancing community health and honoring the quiet dedication of those who care for others every single day.

Members of the public are invited to support the advocacy by participating in the Care2Care fundraising activities. Raffle tickets are available for only ₱20, with exciting prizes from our generous sponsors to be won. Donations of any amount are likewise welcome, with proceeds helping make Care Camp accessible to more caregivers while supporting the mission of The Ruth Foundation.
