Taylor Swift Celebrates LGBTQ+ Rights At The MTV VMAs

MTV’s annual Video Music Awards took place last August 26 and one of the night’s big winners was, inevitably, Taylor Swift. With two recently released music videos making waves and her newly released album becoming the year’s top US seller after a short 2 days, it was only to be expected. This year Swift was given the honor of Video of the Year for “You Need to Calm Down”.

This was, of course, the music video studded with queer icons and personalities in obvious support of the LGBTQ+ community. Swift reinforced the video’s message of equality and pride in her acceptance speech. She first thanked all those who voted for her video for the audience-chosen award, saying “in this video, several points were made. So you voting for this video means that you want a world where we’re all treated equally. Regardless of who we love, regardless of how we identify.”

She continued to talk about the Equality Act, a bill in the United States which affords the LGBTQ+ protections on the basis of their gender and sexual orientation — similar to the Philippines’ SOGIE bill. ”At the end of this video there was a petition—and there still is a petition—for the Equality Act which basically just says we all deserve equal rights under the law and I want to thank you to everyone who signed that petition because it now has half a million signatures,” she expressed.
