This 1000-Bed Emergency Coronavirus Hospital Was Built In 10 Days

According to state media, China has just completed construction on an emergency hospital built specifically to battle the Novel Coronavirus or nCoV.

Work on the hospital was reported to have begun on January 23 and ended early on February 2, making for a 10-day construction period. The hospital is said to be equipped with 1000 hospital beds in order to address the quick spread of the virus. It has an area of 25,000 square meters or 269,000 square feet.

With construction on the building having been concluded, control of the hospital has now been passed to the medical staff. Huoshenshan Hospital, as Wuhan’s makeshift hospital is called, will be staffed by 1,400 medical personnel from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

Huoshenshan Hospital required around-the-clock work in order to finish construction in such a short amount of time. It utilized 4,000 workers and 1,000 vehicles throughout its assembly. Specialist engineers were brought in by authorities to maximize efficiency in the building process.

The hospital’s design is said to have been based on Beijing’s emergency hospital that was built in 2003. At the time, the hospital was used to battle the SARS outbreak.

Huoshenshan Hospital opened its doors to patients last Monday, February 3.

A second emergency hospital, Leishenshan Hospital, is currently being constructed 25 miles away from Huoshenshan Hospital in order to accommodate more patients. Leishenshan Hospital is projected to open on Wednesday, February 5, with a capacity of 1,600 beds.
