On October 16, the organization announced that the movie had been nominated for “Best Youth Film.” It will compete against Australia’s Magic Beach, China’s She Sat There Like All Ordinary Ones (KAI SHI DE QIANG), India’s BOONG, and New Zealand’s The Mountain.
Project 8 Projects, the production company founded by Sunshine‘s director Antoinette Jadaone and Dan Villegas, expressed its delight on their social media pages.
“YOU DID IT, SUNSHINE,” the production house wrote. “SUNSHINE is nominated for Best Youth Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the region’s highest accolade in film!”
Sunshine tells the story of a young gymnast, played by Maris, who unexpectedly discovers she is pregnant during the week of the national team tryouts.
Alongside Maris, the film also stars Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Jennica Garcia, and more. The psychological sports film previously premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Since its inception in 2007, APSA has been hailed as the “region’s highest accolade in film, where cinematic excellence shines.” The ceremony will take place on November 30 in Australia.
