Simpl: Addictive and Guilt-Free Vegan Sauces

“Sawsawan” or sauces have long been a part of Filipino culture. Even Lapu-Lapu loved having chili sauces with his meals. If you think about it, most of our well-known Filipino dishes also come with delicious sauces. From the creamy peanut kare-kare sauce to the savory sour and salty blend of the adobo sauce, our love for sauces is truly evident. We add sauces to balance out dishes according to our preferences.

A salty dish will often be paired with a sour sauce, while sweet viand will often be tempered with something salty or sour. Here’s the truth, though: most of our delicious sauces are quite fattening and sky-high is cholesterol and calories. This is where Simpl comes in.

Simpl is a brand that sells 100% plant-based premium flavored vegan sauces that can be eaten on their own (as a dip) or incorporated into a meal. And when we say plant-based; we mean these vegan-friendly sauces are egg-free, dairy-free, and cholesterol-free.

Simpl is the brainchild of two best friends, Daryl Co and Tiffany Uy.

Daryl transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in 2015 and started cooking her own food due to the lack of vegan options in the Philippines. They then developed these healthy and delicious sauces as an alternative, and to make it easier for people to transition to veganism.

Simpl started back in 2018 with two main sauces: Truffle Rosemary and Smokey Bacon. They recently launched their newest flavor: Sesame Nori. These delectable sauces come in 100g and 200g bottles.

The Truffle Rosemary (Php275 – 200g, Php180 – 100g), an amazing blend of truffle oil and rosemary herbs, is highly addictive and will definitely shake your tastebuds, making you want to dip in just about anything! Daryl recommends trying this with pasta.

The Smokey Bacon (Php250 – 200g, Php150 – 100g) will make you do a double take after your first taste. As I am also a vegan, I was really surprised by how well and accurate the sauce tastes like smoked bacon. This is by far my favorite flavor among the three.

If you love Japanese food, you’ll definitely love Simpl’s Asian-inspired sauce, Sesame Nori (Php275 – 200g, Php180 – 100g)! It’s a mix of tangy and sweet with a touch of toasted sesame seeds and actual nori. You can add this flavorsome sauce to a bowl of ramen to make it creamier.

All of these sauces can also be used as a dip, salad dressing, or ingredient to add flavor to various pasta sauces or soups. You should definitely get a bag of their Manna Breadsticks, too, because they go so well together. I followed Daryl’s recommendation of using the sauces for pasta and I’m really glad I did. My favorites would be the Smokey Bacon and the Sesame Nori.

Simpl also offers frozen food items that are 100% plant based: tuna-style turner and chorizo style sausage. The tuna-style turner is a vegan tuna pie made from a mix of artichokes, chickpeas and Simpl’s sesame nori sauce. The chorizo style sausage is made from vital wheat gluten, which is basically the protein content extracted from flour. The flavor comes from an assortment of herbs and spices.

Daryl Co and Tiffany Uy plan to expand Simpl’s product line with more flavors and maybe even more food items. I personally cannot wait to see what’s in store for Simpl.
