Should we start wearing face masks at home?

In an interview on GMA News’ Unang Hirit earlier today, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año reminded us that the transmission of the coronavirus can also happen between family members. This meant having to wear face masks and face shields even at home.

(Here’s where you can buy face masks and face shields online!)

The DILG chief said, “Dapat ang best try ay gawin nila. Ang pinaka-importante dyan, kung talagang hindi nila maiiwasan, talagang magsuot sila ng mask. Advisable din ‘yung face shield dyan.” (They should try to do their best. The most important thing is that if they cannot avoid [being close to each other], they should really wear a mask. Face shields are also advisable.

)

Family members who go outside for personal or work purposes should also wear face masks and practice physical distancing at their respective houses, according to Año. “Ang importante rin, ‘yung mga elders na kasama natin sa bahay dapat maprotektahan sila,” he added.

(It is also important to protect our elderly at home.)

This advice comes after the National Task Force against COVID-19 reported last week that workplaces and poor communities are the most critical areas for the transmission of the virus.

As of yesterday, there have been 126,885 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines with 2,209 deaths (as of writing).
