Shiok Asian Cuisine in the Fort Global City

Tucked within the chill spots of the Bonifacio Stop Over, in the Fort Bonifacio Global City, is a new restaurant that will have you saying “SHIOK!”

The Shiok Asian Cuisine is the newest addition to the growing trend of Singaporean inspired chow spots in the Philippines. Though for the people behind Shiok, it wasn’t enough to just bring Singapore to Manila, they had to bring in Malaysia, Hong Kong and the WORLD to our table!

Inspired by the many travels of their lead chef, Shiok hopes to enlighten the local taste-buds with some worldly flavors.

Shiok is a Singaporean slang that means “masarap,” which is a Filipino term that means something “tastes good.” So hearing “Shiok” is a good thing!

Three of my “Shiokiest” (not sure if that’s a word…) dishes at Shiok were the Hainan Chicken Rice, the Sambal Prawns and the Spicy Pineapple Fish.

First of all, I’ve raved about how much I like the Hainanese Chicken Dish from that other place (Singapore Chicken Rice) I went to. So it’s no surprise that trying more of it would delight my tongue (that’s what she said)!

The interesting thing about the Hainan Chicken here at Shiok is that they import their chicken from Hong Kong! They say it’s because the tenderness and taste of the chicken is different. With fatter, tastier and more flavorful chickens that come from Hong Kong. One interesting fact I learned is that in Hong Kong, chicken is more expensive than duck meat. So that just gives me a small hint of the good quality of food they serve here. Shiok baby!

Also, you definitely need to try the Sambal Prawns! It’s a chilli based sauce popular in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines as well as the Netherlands because of Indonesian influences. It is typically made from a variety of peppers. I of course, had to ask them to tone the heat down for mine. You can watch the video we made where I record them cooking it from the start. In the end, the prawns came out perfect. With just enough spices and an amazing texture that almost melts in your mouth. Definitely Shiok!

The Spicy Pineapple Fish on the other hand is a deep fried fish fillet that is smothered in spicy pineapple sauce. A lively dish that has a sweet and spicy note to it. Can you say Shiok!

Finally, I also really recommend the Iced Yuan Yang drink which is a mixed drink that has coffee and Hong Kong style milk tea. The term Yuan Yang is sort of like the Yin Yang sign but here represents a black duck and a white duck swimming side by side and in love. Ohhhhh. But yeah, it tasted good. Totally Shiok!

Ok, so I don’t think I’m using the term “Shiok” too well…. but either way… next time, When In Manila, come to the Shiok Restaurant in the Fort Bonifacio Global City to see if these Shiokifying dishes make you say SHIOK! Be sure to try the Hainan Chicken, the Sambal Prawns, the Spicy Pineapple Fish and the Iced Yuan Yang!
