Growing up, my world was 8-bit. I spent countless hours playing arcade games and was particularly dedicated to mastering the perfect maze run in “Pac-Man”. The formula was simple, pure, and perfect: eat all the dots, avoid the ghosts, and grab the power pellet for a satisfying, ghost-chomping reversal of fortune.
So when I heard about Bandai Namco’s “Shadow Labyrinth” on the Nintendo Switch, I was intrigued but skeptical. Could a new game possibly capture that same magic without losing its soul?

The answer, it turns out, is a resounding and joyful yes. “Shadow Labyrinth” is a brilliant evolution that takes the core DNA of the original and adds layers of strategy and tension that feel both fresh and respectful.
Gone are the brightly lit, open mazes. Instead, “Shadow Labyrinth” feels more like a stealth-action game than a retro arcade romp filled with bits and pieces from other old-school favorites. It’s a fantastic twist that completely changes the feel of the Pac-Man we once knew.

Graphically, the game is a major feast. It manages to feel both nostalgic and new, with its moody, atmospheric lighting and sleek character designs. The music and sound effects are fantastic too, building a sense of suspense with every move. Every level also feels tediously handcrafted, offering new challenges and puzzle-like elements that keep the experience from ever getting stale.
“Shadow Labyrinth” is a fantastic example of how to modernize a classic without ruining it. It respects its heritage while building something new and exciting on top of it. For any old-school gamer, this is a must-play. It’s the Pac-Man you know and love but with a clever twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
“Shadow Labyrinth” is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
