Pop star and two-time Grammy winner Sabrina Carpenter is taking on her first major studio film, signing on to star in and produce an untitled musical inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. According to Deadline, the project will be directed by Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers, Succession), who also penned the script.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film marks a fresh take on the classic story—distinct from Disney’s iconic 1951 animated feature and its live-action adaptations.
Marc Platt (Wicked: For Good) will produce through Universal-based Marc Platt Productions, with Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton also onboard. Studio oversight will be provided by Ryan Jones and Jacqueline Garell, with Katie McNicol representing Marc Platt Productions.
Carpenter has steadily built her acting résumé with roles in Prime Video’s Emergency, the indie drama The Short History of the Long Road, Netflix’s Tall Girl films, Disney+’s Clouds, and The Hate U Give. She’s also set to appear in a Disney+ Muppet Show special.
Musically, Carpenter is riding a high after her seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend, earned six Grammy nominations and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Her Short n’ Sweet Tour has been extended with additional North American dates, including shows at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York.
Scafaria, meanwhile, has a growing reputation for directing films and TV with a mix of humor and heart, from Hustlers to I Love LA, the HBO series she also executive produces. She’s also attached to direct A24’s upcoming comedy Jonty starring Jesse Plemons and Cole Escola.
Universal’s upcoming musical promises to be a bold, new spin on Carroll’s classic tale, pairing Carpenter’s rising star power with Scafaria’s sharp directorial voice.
