On January 22, the BI released a statement announcing that a 21-year-old Russian vlogger identified as Nikita Chekhov was arrested inside a condominium building in Quezon City after his videos—claiming he would spread HIV in Metro Manila—went viral online.
“These so-called rage-bait videos irresponsibly cause fear and panic among the public,” BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said in an official statement. “Foreign nationals who come to the Philippines to spread alarm, disrespect our people, or abuse our hospitality are not welcome and will face deportation.”
The controversial vlogger caught the attention of netizens after posting videos in which he claimed he would spread HIV during his stay in the country. Records show that Chekhov arrived in the Philippines as a tourist on January 15.
His online behavior sparked widespread concern and fear among social media users.
As of writing, Nikita Chekhov has been placed at the BI’s detention facility for deportation proceedings.
