When in Manila, OPM has been a subject of debate lately. Three questions are in line: Is OPM dead? Is OPM still alive? Is OPM just in coma? In the middle of the debate, a well-known ’90s musical figure takes the stage to launch his new album after four years since his solo debut — Rico Blanco.
Rico Blanco, clad in a fierce but festive attire, rocked Teatrino, Greenhills last night. The stage was caught in between the grandeur of Philippine fiesta brought about by the costumes and the mystery of outer space made possible by the excellent use of lights.
As to what genre the album falls in, Rico Blanco answers, “The title IS the genre.” His new album’s title — Galactik Fiestamatik — is rightly so for the songs give you a magical mix of ethnic beats, New Wave sounds, and contemporary pop melodies.
Rico Blanco‘s Galactik Fiestamatik will drive you wild in the mayhem of nine intriguing songs which are distinctly far from his musical style years back.
1/ Amats
2/ Burado
3/ Lipat Bahay
4/ When the Wheels Turn
5/ Sayaw
6/ Hours and Days
7/ Chismis
8/ What It Is
9/ Ngayon
Galactik Fiestamatik actually made Rico Blanco the first Pinoy to reach the top spot on iTunes upon its release last July.
Parokya ni Edgar’s Chito Miranda even tweeted “Hayup talaga ‘tong Rico Blanco na ‘to. Pinapakinggan ko yung bago nyang album ngayon. Nakakatakot. Para syang mad scientist ng music.” I have to agree. His music would take you to places where adventure and celebration reign supreme.
When in Manila, I don’t want to dwell on the three-question issue because that deserves a post on its own. But in this post I will tell you two things I’m sure of: (1) The local music industry needs support from all of us, Filipinos, because we are first and foremost the ones OPM is dedicated to. (2) Last night, Rico Blanco didn’t have to tell us — he just had to sing — what life is like with OPM.
Brought to you by Warner Music Philippines, Galactik Fiestamatik is available for download on iTunes worldwide.
