The PUP Harana String Company (PUP HSC), the resident rondalla and string group of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, announces its upcoming special recital and culmination event, “Once Upon a Spell: Maestros in the Making,” on December 13, 2025 (Saturday), from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the PUP Bulwagang Balagtas, 4th Floor of the Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center (NALLRC), Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa, Manila.
This event is a collaborative initiative between the PUP University Center for Culture and Arts and the UP College of Music. It also serves as a partial requirement for MUED 197: Special Project in Music Education for Mr. Janroni Max, under the advisory of Asst. Prof. Jesher Edrei P. Perez. This highly anticipated conductor’s recital is the finale of an intensive rondalla workshop led by Mr. Max. The event is designed to showcase the musical abilities and emerging potential of PUP HSC’s members and trainees after weeks of specialized instruction in performing and conducting Philippine rondalla music.
The PUP Harana String Company, formerly known as PUP Rondalla, is recognized for expanding traditional Filipino string music by arranging and covering contemporary songs from OPM, pop, and international genres, all while upholding the artistry and integrity of the Philippine rondalla. The recital reflects the organization’s vision to be a leading symbol of excellence in music and artistic growth that enriches the cultural landscape.
The program promises an enchanting afternoon of string artistry, featuring pieces conducted and performed by the participants themselves. Attendees—including PUP students (PUPians), families, friends, other rondalla organizations, and partners—will witness the culmination of dedication, technical refinement, and artistic growth. The event will also feature a special duet performance by Mr. Patrick Aquino and Mr. Janroni Max, as well as a special performance by the UP Rondalla.
