A Public Internet Center Is Coming to Davao City — Here’s Why It Matters

In a digital-first world, not everyone gets to stay connected. But Davao City is changing the narrative with its newly approved ordinance for a Public Internet Center, to be built inside People’s Park.

As someone who lives, works, and creates content in Davao, I can honestly say this is one of the most exciting initiatives we’ve seen in local governance recently. And here’s why it matters.

What We Know About the Davao Public Internet Center

The 18th Regular Session of Davao’s 20th City Council approved the ordinance to create a two-story Public Internet Center, a 746.38-square-meter space that will provide:

  • Free computer access inside the facility

  • Free public WiFi around the People’s Park area

  • Digital training spaces for job seekers, especially those entering the BPO sector

  • An extension of services offered by the Davao City Library and Information Center (DCLIC)

The best part? It’s open to all Davaoeños for free; just register through Davao City Library and Information Center.

Why This Is A Big Deal

We’ve all seen government projects that look great on paper but miss the mark on impact. This isn’t one of them. The Public Internet Center is exactly the kind of initiative that meets people where they are… literally and digitally.

Davao’s Public Library Already Set the Standard

The Davao City Library and Information Center has been quietly doing the work. For just ₱100, Davaoeños can get a library card that comes with one hour of daily computer access, all year round. That structure already proves that Davao can maintain accessible, well-run public services. The new Internet Center builds on that momentum.

It Bridges the Digital Gap for Underserved Communities

This is about access. For students without laptops, job hunters without stable connections, or freelancers relying on mobile data, this facility offers free, safe, and consistent internet access in the heart of the city.

It Aligns with the City’s Digital Agenda

The ordinance supports Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s digitalization efforts, ensuring Davao doesn’t get left behind in a rapidly changing tech landscape.

It Reinforces the Value of Public Spaces

People’s Park is more than a photo spot; it’s where locals gather, relax, and feel part of the city. Adding a tech-forward facility inside it reinforces what public spaces should be: inclusive, multi-functional, and for everyone. Now that the National Museum of the Philippines’ satellite branch in Davao is located within People’s Park, the future Public Internet Center will add another highlight to the park.

The Future Feels More Connected

This ordinance may sound like a small win, but for Davaoeños who rely on the internet for school, work, job applications, research, or even just connecting with loved ones, it can be a life-changing upgrade. And if you’ve ever struggled to find a signal or stretch your mobile data, you know exactly what that feels like.

Got a Library Card Yet?

Whether you’re a student, a job hunter, or just someone who wants a quiet spot to browse and learn, this is your sign to grab that ₱100 Davao City Library card and take full advantage of what Davao City offers. And when the Public Internet Center opens? Even more reasons to show up and plug in.

The approval of this ordinance is a clear signal that Davao is serious about making technology, education, and opportunity more accessible. Whether you’re a student pulling an all-nighter, a freelancer looking for WiFi that doesn’t drop every five minutes, or someone upskilling for a new job, this space is for you.
