Philippine Fashion Celebrated by MEGA Magazine: A Class of Champions

When in Manila, Independence Month is further emphasized by MEGA Magazine as they celebrated Philippine Fashion through its exhibit last June 19, 2012 in the Podium Atrium, which showcased a collection of the most breathtaking works by the country’s top designers who were alumni of the MEGA Young Designers Competition and who continuously elevate Philippine Fashion both in the local and international scene.

Among these designers was Furne One, whose collection of gold, oriental-looking gowns caught my sister’s attention (the gown in the middle was actually worn by British pop singer, Natasha Bedingfield!). The three iconic pieces displayed were fresh from the MEGA Pinoy Pride Ball, and are part of a multi-million peso worth collection. Another brilliant designer was Ivarluski Aseron, whose dress I instantly fell in love with (this one was worn by Lovi Poe). A personal favorite (who was a contestant I followed in the first season of Project Runway Philippines), Veejay Floresca, was among the list of other notable designers, and whose dress displayed won in the 47th Japan Fashion Design Competition in Tokyo, Japan.

In its quest to look for the next new face in Filipino design, MEGA created the MEGA Young Designers Competition in 1994 to bring together the next best local designers who could wow the runways of the country and of the world. Some renowned designers started their careers through the competition, like Patrice Ramos-Diaz, Gian Romano, Ivarluski Aseron, Russell Villafuerte, Mich Dulce, Oj Hofer, Rajo Laurel, and even Furne One.

The evening started with cocktails and various wines served by CCA. All the while, everyone was free to roam around and admire the different gowns and dresses. A short program then introduced and awarded some of the designers present. It was a very exciting affair that celebrated Filipino brilliance and truly acknowledged the achievements that these wonderful designers have made and the future success that they will surely accomplish.
