Parenting Done Right: A Mother’s Support For Her Daughter’s Creativity

One of the hypes of this long weekend was the Asia Pop Comic Con and one of the event’s main highlight was Millie Bobby Brown’s visit.

Stranger Things, the hit Netflix series which Millie Bobby Brown starred in, may not be the type of series a young girl would usually be interested in, but Sophie proved to be awesome to love it.

In fact, she even had her hair shaved off the way Millie’s character, Eleven, did!

Now, aside from highlighting how awesome this kid is, I want to highlight Sophie’s cool mom, Czyka Tumaliuan, as well. Check out her actual Facebook post here. I’m going to quote some of it, too, because I guess her words hit me right in the feels.

As parents, I think it’s crucial that we build a safe space for our children where they can hold a lightsaber and use the force on you, a universe where they can wear a dress even if they are expected to wear a suit and tie, a place where they can go naked, and be totally vulnerable with confidence.

Every kid needs a home where they can be whoever they want to be without being shamed and tagged as a freak. Every kid needs an oasis that they can always turn to when the real world sucks the life out them. As parents, WE MUST BE THIS REFUGE. As parents, WE MUST BE OUR CHILDREN’S SANCTUARY.

If your kids tell you that they have powers or magic, believe them. Look them in the eye, and tell them that you believe them with all your heart and mean it. The world needs more dreamers, more supers, more warriors. We must let our kids do things out of love, fun and faith, not fear.

I’m not a mom just yet, but Czyka is kinda like #momgoals for me. I grew up feeling a little “odd one out” because of a variety of reasons, most of which stemmed from my outbursts of creativity.

Though I’m sure not everyone would agree to Czyka’s parenting style a.k.a. my future parenting style, it’s very important to let the child feel that he or she is supported in his or her creativity no matter what. It’s quite crucial

The world is already full of negativity as it is. Mental health issues are becoming rampant, so let’s not add up to that, shall we?

As Czyka mentioned on her post, “Every kid needs an oasis that they can always turn to when the real world sucks the life out them. As parents, WE MUST BE THIS REFUGE. As parents, WE MUST BE OUR CHILDREN’S SANCTUARY.”

Childhood, she said, is a wonderland, if we let it. The real world can be challenging once in a while and sometimes, retreats from it take the form of another reality beyond what is known. The imagination is a beautiful thing.

Let’s not dim it, especially those of the children.

I think Czyka is a very cool mom and Sophie is lucky to have her! Do you think so, too?
