It’s officially Habagat season. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has declared the start of the southwest monsoon, or Habagat season, in the country.

In an advisory issued on May 30, PAGASA confirmed that the changes in wind patterns, increased rainfall events, and the prevalence of southwest monsoon winds mark the onset of the Habagat season.
“With the weakening of the Easterlies, these developments indicate the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in the Philippines – one of the precursors of the onset of the rainy season,” the advisory read.
PAGASA added that occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms, particularly over the western sections of the country, are expected. Periods of monsoon breaks may also occur.
The start of the Habagat season may signal the official onset of the rainy season within the next two weeks.
“PAGASA will continue to monitor the weather situation of the country. The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the adverse impacts of the Habagat such as floods and rain-induced landslides,” the agency noted.
Stay safe and dry, everyone!
