OH NO: The Eighth Season of Game of Thrones Will be the Last

OH NO The Eighth Season of Game of Thrones is the Last

For Game of Thrones fans, we have bad news: the yet-to-be announced eighth season of the HBO show will be its last.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys broke the news yesterday. He said, “If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.”

However, there is no news whether how many episodes the eighth season will have. The seventh season will be shortened and will have seven episodes, instead of the series’s traditional 10. If it is true that the producers will only allow 75 episodes for the series as a whole, then it would mean 13 episodes for the final season.

Bloys added that spin-offs are still on the table.

Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy drama, is HBO’s  most-watched and longest-running series. When the sixth season closed, it was estimated that 25 million people watch the show. The story is set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, and follows different dynasties as they aim to succeed the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

Since the show premiered in 2011, it garnered a wide fanbase and widespread critical acclaim. In total, Game of Thrones has won 26 Emmy awards.
