In time for Transgender Awareness Week, young actor Nic Chien, son of Broadway icon Lea Salonga and entrepreneur Robert Chien, shared a personal milestone on Instagram: he recently underwent chest reconstruction, or top surgery, and has been recovering over the past month.

Nic posted a series of photos documenting his surgery and healing journey, noting that he waited until he felt comfortable enough to share.
“The healing process was brutal! But worth it,” he wrote in the caption.

According to Nic, undergoing the procedure has had a significant impact on his well-being. He said that being free from wearing a binder, worrying about judgment, and finally being able to go shirtless has been “one of the most gratifying things ever.”
Nic also expressed gratitude for having access to gender-affirming care. He hoped that sharing his own experience would help highlight why conversations around it matter, especially during Transgender Awareness Week.
Nic ended his post by acknowledging the support he received from his parents throughout the process.
Earlier this year, Nic appeared in Into the Woods as Jack, performing alongside Lea, who played The Witch. He was also recently announced as part of the cast of the upcoming production of Spring Awakening, where he will alternate the role of Moritz Stiefel with Bar Boys: The Musical actor Omar Uddin.
