The Metropolitan Museum of Manila in BGC, a vibrant hub of contemporary art and culture in the heart of the Philippines! I was blown away by the incredible thought-provoking exhibits on display, each one a unique exploration of the art scene in Manila from both local and international artists.
There are currently three active art exhibits at the MET Museum Manila BGC, namely: “Quick Turn on Hyper Highways” by Ronald Ventura, “Points of Origin” by Jefrë, and “Sounds of Blackness,” curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah.
Ronald Ventura’s “Quick Turn on Hyper Highways” exhibit was an absolute delight for fans of dynamic and unconventional art. Ventura’s fusion of realism, cartoons, and graffiti resulted in a stunning portrayal of chaotic disarray inspired by science fiction, Western history, Asian mythology, Catholicism, and popular comic book characters.
Jefrë’s “Points of Origin” exhibit was equally fascinating, featuring a series of thought-provoking works that explored the artist’s Filipino-American heritage. The pieces were a beautiful blend of culture, identity, and contemporary art, showcasing Jefrë’s incredible talent and artistic vision.
Finally, “Sounds of Blackness” was a powerful group exhibition featuring an ensemble of visual artists from the African Diaspora, many of whom were exhibiting in the Philippines for the first time. The exhibition was curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah and anchored by a selection of works from the collection of Filipino collector Timothy Tan. The exhibition showcased a diverse range of works that evoked expressions of joy, pain, beauty, and the complexities of Black life around the globe, across various mediums.
