Manila’s most famous elephant, Mali, may have passed away in 2023, but her story continues—this time at the National Museum of Natural History.

Mayor Isko Moreno recently announced that Mali’s taxidermied remains will be transferred from the Manila Zoo to the museum, where she will join other iconic preserved animals like the Philippine eagle and Lolong, the world’s largest saltwater crocodile.
For decades, Mali—whose full name was Vishwa Ma’ali—was a household name in Manila. Donated by Sri Lanka in 1981, she quickly became the star of the Manila Zoo, drawing generations of visitors who grew up seeing her as the zoo’s main attraction.
After her death in November 2023 due to old age, Mali underwent an 11-month taxidermy process handled by PetEternity free of charge. She returned to public view in December 2024, attracting crowds of visitors eager to see the gentle giant once more.
Now, her permanent home will be the National Museum, where experts have the technology and resources to ensure Mali’s preservation for future generations.
This move allows Filipinos to continue remembering Mali not only as a beloved zoo resident but also as part of the country’s natural history.
When in Manila, don’t miss the chance to visit the National Museum of Natural History soon. You’ll get to see Mali once again, this time alongside the nation’s most treasured wildlife exhibits.
