Malacañang Declares April 22 Day of National Mourning for Nora Aunor

Malacañang has declared Tuesday, April 22, 2025, as a “Day of National Mourning” for Nora Aunor.

Proclamation no. 870, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on April 21, recognized the superstar’s outstanding contribution to Philippine cinema, television, and music, which has left a lasting legacy on the nation.

“The passing of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Nora Cabltera Villamayor, also known as Nora Aunor, is a great loss to the Filipino people and to the nation’s cultural and artistic community,” it wrote.

“Her artistry, depth, and dedication as a performer elevated the standard of excellence in the fields of arts and culture, and inspired generations of actors, filmmakers, and audiences, both in local and international stage,” it added.

The proclamation also stated that the national flag “shall be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset” on all government establishments throughout the Philippines and abroad.

As of writing, the superstar’s remains have been brought to the Metropolitan Theater on April 22 for a necrological service, which was spearheaded by The National  Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)  to honor her life and legacy. Following the tribute program, the state funeral rites will continue at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.

Nora Aunor passed away on April 16 at the age of 71. She died from acute respiratory failure.

The superstar, who was widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential Filipino actresses of all time, was named the National Artist of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022. Throughout her decades-long career, she bagged 13 FAMAS Awards, 10 Gawad Urian Awards, and more.
