We all knew that eventually designer face masks would happen, but we bet you didn’t see this one coming. Shankar Kurade, a man from Pune, India, had a very unique face mask customized just for him—and it’s made entirely from pure gold. In a report by IndianExpress.com, Kurade shares that he got the idea from when he saw a video of a man wearing a silver mask.
Crafted by a goldsmith, Kurade’s face mask—which cost 300,00 rupees (approximately P200,000) to make—is said to be light, weighing at around only 50 grams. It also has tiny holes on it to ensure the wearer will have no difficulty breathing. But on the subject of efficacy, Kurade admits to news agency ANI he is not sure whether the mask can actually offer protection.
Kurade and his golden face mask quickly gained flak online. Many expressed that the parade of wealth is insensitive especially when half of his country is starving and he could have used that money to help people in need instead. Some are baffled as to why the man would spend so much on a face mask he wasn’t sure was effective, while some argued he could just have brought the more effective and much more economical choice—the N95.
But, as Kurade has pointed out, his entire family loves gold, and that he wouldn’t hesitate having golden face masks made for them too should they all want one.
