And just like that, another year has passed. But before we face 2019 head on, we want to look back at the amazing year that was 2018. Whether in events, pop culture, and one of our favorite fast food chains releasing a new amazing item on their menu, there were a couple of highlights in the past year in both the local and international scene.
So here, we’ve rounded up eight of the best things we’re grateful happened in the year 2018!
8. The Royal Wedding
The wedding of the year and years-to-come happened in May 2018, when Prince Harry tied the knot with former American actress Meghan Markle. It was a significant moment in history as a half-African American woman, the now-Duchess Meghan Markle, married into the British royal family.
7. Boracay reopened to the public
After six months of island rehabilitation, the island of Boracay welcomed tourists once again. Having suffered from the rapid growth of commercial developments, tourists revisiting the island now describe Boracay as almost unrecognizable as its paradisiacal qualities are restored. We saved an island in 2018! Faith in humanity, restored.
6. Ariana Grande gave us “thank u, next”
2018 was the year of Ariana Grande and don’t you dare even fight us on this. Our girl Ari had a tough, tough year, but it’s the way that she bounced back at the end of 2018 with hit single “thank u, next” that talks about self-love that also makes us say “thank u” for her music.
5. McDonald’s blessed us with the Choco Sundae
One of the best things that happened in 2018? The McDonald’s CHOCO SUNDAE came into our lives. Yup, in 2018, McDonald’s introduced this chocolatey version of their sweet and creamy soft-serve Sundae. Can we get a hashtag #blessedt? You can still try the Choco Sundae, so catch it now while you still can! This chocolatey dessert is available for a limited time only in select kiosks in Metro Manila and Luzon. 4. Crazy Rich Asians
2018 was a big year for Asian representation in Hollywood! It’s really about time Asians were given the spotlight they deserve in modern cinema, and the fact that Crazy Rich Asians did amazing in the box office around the globe only proves one thing: the world is ready for more all-Asian films.
3. The Passing of the Philippine Mental Health Law
The Philippines took a huge step forward in 2018, when the Mental Health Law was officially signed. The law aims to make mental health services accessible to all, and to finally break the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This is a big deal for Filipinos, and yes, we’re celebrating!
2. The first lake was discovered on Mars
In 2018, the first actual lake of liquid water was discovered on Mars, which may be a hint that the Red Planet could actually sustain life. With the way things are going here on earth, this new piece of information is quite good to know—just in case we might actually need Planet B.
1. Philippines bagged the Miss Universe title…again.
Just three years after Pia Wurtzbach won the title in 2015, Philippines representative Catriona Gray stole hearts at the 2018 Miss Universe pageant and bagged the crown. Catriona gave such an unforgettable performance that a new walk, her walk, was born at the pageant—the now-iconic slow-mo Lava Walk.
