The Philippines is known for its unique culture and breathtaking coastal and marine resources. Moreover, the pristine beaches and beautiful islands in the Philippines are considered one of the top destinations of local and international tourists. However, not so very often do we see sharks lurking around our part of town. While these are known as predators of the deep, they are still considered part of marine life.
Apparently, circulating online are disturbing photos of giant sharks allegedly caught by fishermen in Batangas.
The photos were only shared to Mr. Jessie Fronda Delos Reyes, a marine specialist of Conserve and Protect Ocean in Calatagan, Batangas. According to him, the sharks caught were classified as Tiger Sharks. They based their conclusion on the teeth structure.
The Tiger Shark’s teeth are similar to a can opener. They are commonly known as “Sea Tiger” and capable of attaining a length over 5 m (16 ft 5 in). These sharks are found tropical and temperate waters.
Unfortunately, one of the sharks caught was believed to be pregnant.

“I don’t know what to do. I know these poor fishermen also need to eat and earn a living. The law should protect these animals, as well as, animal conservation. I don’t know why I suddenly felt weary to the people who sent the photos in my Facebook. 2 Sharks were caught by the Fishermen in JRC Beach, Brgy. Balibago, Lian, Batangas. The story was, 2 were caught – one was pregnant.”
Unfortunately, Mr. Delos Reyes further explained that there is no law to prohibit such act, specifically for that kind of shark. The law can only protect the Butanding or Whale Sharks. He added: “the majority of the shark found in the Philippines has no protection basically in National Law. Yes, it sad but that is the reality in our land.”
A fisherman’s job is not always as easy as it looks. Most often than not, their lives are at stake, too.

Even though this act is quite a disturbance, it’s an interesting fact to note that tiger sharks are one of the most aggressive species of sharks out there. They are responsible for a large amount of fatal shark attacks on humans. It’s a bit alarming that specimens were caught in batangas.
Bata pa lang ako alam ko ng bawal kumuha o humuli ng maliliit na isda dahil mabilis mababawasan ang lahi nila.. naituro yan sa school namin at alam ko sa school naituturo yan at na ipapalabas yan sa mga news.. ang pag huli ng mga ganyan.. ay ipinag babawal!! nakaka intindi lang siguro nito ay ang mga taong may pagmamahal sa Inang Kalikasan hindi naman kailangan mag karoon pa ng batas! Disiplina at pag galang sa pinag kukuhanan ng ikakabuhay ng tao! Orayt!

Wala pa naman palang batas, so I don’t think there’s a problem with that. At tsaka isolated case lang naman ito, not everytime na lang eh nanghuhuli sila.
