LOOK: Instagram Memorializes Accounts of Deceased Kpop Stars

Though they are no longer with us, Kpop stars who have passed away continue to live on in fans’ hearts. And Instagram has rolled out a new feature that honors them, as well as other celebrities who’ve gone.

On social media, fans shared screenshots of a notification they received upon checking the Instagram accounts of SHINee’s Jonghyun, Goo Hara, and Sulli—all of whom reportedly died by suicide.

“This account has been memorialized. Memorialized accounts are places to remember and celebrate someone’s life after they’ve passed away,” the pop-up notification read.

According to Instagram’s Help Center, memorialized accounts have the following features:

  • No one can log into it
  • The word “Remembering” will be shown next to the person’s name on their profile
  • Posts the deceased person shared, including photos and videos, stay on Instagram, and are visible to the audience they were shared with
  • Memorialized accounts don’t appear in certain places on Instagram, like Explore
  • No changes may be made to existing posts and information

Accounts of other deceased celebrities, like Cameron Boyce, have also been memorialized, but it’ll be a while before Instagram is able to target all persons who have passed on.
