Crazy Rich Titas would be so happy to hear that they can now play mahjong with their amigas ~in style~.
French luxury fashion brand Hermès is behind this (very) fancy mahjong set, that is made of palissander wood and Swift calfskin. The set, which Hermès named Helios, is worth US $41,000, or about 2 million PHP. Hermès is also the brand behind the famous Birkin bags that can cost up to millions of pesos per piece.

As this mahjong set is made of leather rather than the traditional bone or ivory though, Hermès’ Helios won’t make that loud clanking sound many Asians are familiar with as their titos and titas shuffle the mahjong tiles in between games. Why? Hermès explains in their website: “The meaning of mahjong in Chinese is ‘squabbling sparrow’—an allusion to the noise made by the one hundred and forty-four tiles that are shuffled when playing the game. The printed full leather tiles knock gently against each other, while the little sticks keep track of the score with a delicate rustling sound.” Ooh, fancy.
I mean, I guess it would be cool to hear what a quiet mahjong game is like, but will it be the same without the loud clanking? The noise is part of the experience!

Hermès fanatics will be happy to learn though that, when purchased, this mahjong set also comes in the classic orange box tied with a Bolduc ribbon—a trademark packaging for Hermès items.
