The Prin-CESS of Genovia just took us all on a trip down memory lane!
Anne Hathaway, the star of the widely-loved movie “Princess Diaries,” commemorated the movie’s 20th anniversary today by posting a number of nostalgic photos on her Instagram account.
“Miracles happen…” she wrote on the caption of the post. “Happy 20th Birthday to #theprincessdiaries, AKA the film that launched a thousand sleep overs.”

Anne played the role of Mia Thermopolis, an awkward American teenager who finds out that she is the heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom, Genovia. She then attempts to learn how to act like a proper royal under the tutelage of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews), and must decide whether to claim the throne or relinquish her title permanently.
“Princess Diaries,” which was based on the book series written by Meg Cabot, garnered overwhelming commercial success on its premiere. It released a sequel three years after which was likewise well-received.
Meg also took to Twitter on the film’s anniversary to express her gratitude to director Garry Marshall and all the cast for bringing her story to life for fans all over the world to love.
“On this day 20 years ago, I attended the world premiere of the #ThePrincessDiaries movie. I’m forever grateful to Garry Marshall, Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, @HeatherMatarazz, and everyone else who helped make our royal Genovia dreams come true!” she said.
