Lea Salonga Sings ‘A Whole New World’ 22 Years Later, Proves She Still Got It
Lea Salonga, theater legend
Where does one begin to describe Lea Salonga?
She is, of course, a judge and coach at The Voice of the Philippines, but to describe her for her role in the singing competition is underestimating the fierceness of this talented lady. After all, she played the lead role of Kim in Miss Saigon in Broadway and the West End, both Eponine and Fantine in Les Miserables for Broadway, and has won an Olivier, a Tony, a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Award and a Theatre World award, some of the biggest recognitions one can receive in theater. On top of that, she holds the distinction for being the first Filipino artist to have been signed to an international record label. In short, Lea served Pinoy Pride even before it was cool.
But one of Lea’s lasting legacies is serving as the voice of two Disney Princesses, Fa Mulan in Mulan and Jasmine in Aladdin. She is the only woman to play two Disney princesses, and she was awarded as a Disney Legend for her contributions to the company.
Lea Salonga is currently touring Europe with Il Divo
A video is spreading online of Lea singing the Aladdin classic A Whole New World with the all-male operatic group Il Divo 22 years after Aladdin, proving that she still has the vocal chops that impressed the world in Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, and Disney.
