“Kable-Kable”: A New UST Musical Unraveling Society’s Truths

MEDIARTRIX – UST is ready to light up the stage once again with its newest original musical production, “Kable-Kable,” written by Alexander Isaiah Samonte & Liara Elisha Turano, managed by Niña Marie De Guzman and Christine Jade Del Rosario, and directed by Enrico Byron Sacramento & Jeri Aliana Ramos. The musical consists of two acts with a total runtime of two hours, featuring ten original songs brought to life by a live band—a triumphant return to the organization’s stage.

Kable-Kable tells a story that explores the blurred lines between light and darkness, truth and lies. It is a tale of hope and solidarity, overcoming the chains of social inequality that hinder freedom, echoing the Philippines’ historical struggle against colonialism.

Set in the dystopian world of Bayan ng Silawan, where the Glare serves as the citizens’ sanctuary from the monsters lurking in the shadows, the story follows Eli, a Glare Knight who has dedicated his life to serving and protecting the light. However, his devotion is put to the test when the town faces its greatest despair—the destruction of the Glare.

Blinded by the brightness of the light, the people fail to see the secrets hidden in the shadows. Amid the conflict between light and darkness, they must confront the truth to embrace the real light and usher in a new era where they can finally rise from the shadows. In the face of this chaos, will the Bayan of Silawan be able to shatter the illusions cast by the light, or will they allow the true light to fade away with the shadows of truth?

When asked about his inspiration for the story, Alexander Isaiah Samonte, one of the scriptwriters, shared that the idea for Kable-Kable sparked in his mind after seeing tangled electric cables on the streets. He saw a reflection of society in them—chaotic yet interconnected. Just as the people of Silawan rely on the Glare, he noted a parallel in how people in the real world desperately seek light (electricity), a basic necessity.

As Samonte described it, “Kable-Kable is essentially about the complexities of our entangled lives,” encapsulating the essence of the story. He explained that life is far from simple—our problems are intertwined, one issue pulling on another until everything descends into chaos. Like tangled cables, the struggles of different people become harder to fix the longer they are ignored.

This theme of interconnectedness was further emphasized by Enrico Byron Sacramento, one of the directors, who reflected on the symbolism of tangled wires. He hopes the audience will develop a sense of empathy and urgency, realizing that the visible disorder of tangled cables hints at deeper, underlying issues. The wires symbolize the interwoven connections we all share as individuals.

“Hopefully, this coming February 11, the audience will receive it in a way that inspires them—not just as viewers, not just as part of the audience, but as future members of the theater industry,” said Sacramento. “We want to inspire future directors and performers who might be watching this production.”

Both Samonte and Sacramento expressed deep gratitude toward the entire production team, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and passion in bringing Kable-Kable to life. They emphasized that the musical would not be the masterpiece it is without the collective efforts of everyone involved.
