South Korean stars IU and Park Bo Gum joined the 2023 Ice Bucket Challenge to mark the construction of South Koreaโs first hospital for patients battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrigโs disease.
According to the National Institutes of Health, ALS is a rare neurological disease that affects motor neurons, the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

On Instagram, they shared videos of themselves doing the newly relaunched challenge that started in 2014. The Ice Bucket Challenge is a campaign that aims to promote awareness of ALS in which the nominated participants pour a bucket of ice water on their heads while being filmed. Participants can nominate others to do the challenge or donate to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

IU encouraged her followers to support the construction of the hospital and nominated actors Lee Do-hyun, Heo Jun-seok, and Lee Joo-young to do the challenge.

Meanwhile, Bo Gum nominated actor Kwak Dong-yeon, girl group Oh My Girl’s Mimi, and boy group The Boyz. In the comments section, IU jokingly asked Bo Gum if wearing a hat was acceptable.

The two were nominated by South Korean singer Sean, who relaunched the challenge.
