Honesty is the best policy: Benguet locals turn down cash aid

Some residents of Bakun, Benguet who were part of the list of beneficiaries for the national government’s financial aid program have voluntarily turned down their slots.

Thirty-five locals from Barangay Gambang, where some of them are elderlies, came forward to local authorities. They said that they are qualified for the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) on the grounds set by the Department of Social Welfare Department (DSWD) even if they were included in the beneficiaries’ list.

“Such act of kindness shows that people of Bakun truly care for others and they unite as one in this time of [the] pandemic,” Bakun Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council officials said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Along with the post, they shared photos of some of the residents who were honest to decline the cash aid.

The cash aid from the government’s SAP will give 18 million low-income families a monthly allowance of between P5,000 to P8,000 for up to two months. Of course, there are a number of exclusions on the national list of beneficiaries.
