Himig ng Kundiman: Revisiting the Past Through Timeless Musical Masterpieces

Poster for Himig ng Kundiman

The UP Manila – Museum of a History of Ideas will celebrate their 3rd year anniversary as an institution this coming October 2017. The museum has been a go-to place for learning the contributions of the University of the Philippines in achieving independence and building the Filipino nation.

Aside from this, it’s also a venue for various events ranging from small-scale meetings and seminars held by the nearby offices and students to dinners and private functions. Performances were also held in this historical and multi-functional piece of architecture. It’s not just a place for learning history but of developing arts and culture as well.

To celebrate this year’s occasion, the museum will have a benefit concert entitled HIMIG NG KUNDIMAN. It will feature classical music compositions of Filipino Maestros: Nicanor Abelardo, Francisco Santiago, Antonio Molina and Juan S. Hernandez. Homegrown music organizations like the UP Manila Classical Ensemble and UP Medicine Choir are the ones who will perform these timeless classics along with selected student-musicians from UP Diliman College of Music under the musical direction of Prof. Ramon Acoymo, Ph.D.

The proceeds from the concert will be used to give life to a more meaningful project which is to have a temporary workspace for the UP Manila Archives and Records Depository which is currently located on the UPM-MHI Chancellor’s Room. It will also be used to the proposed additional exhibition pieces for the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas.

The UPMARD was formerly located on the 4th floor of the old University Library building which was unfortunately affected by the sudden collapsing of the ongoing construction of the new medical arts building for the College of Medicine last December 2016. It is the go-to research facility of students both from inside and outside university for their researches and case studies.

In order to protect and keep the documents, books, old dated photographs and memorabilia under the care of the UPMARD, the funds which will be raised from HIMIG NG KUNDIMAN will be used to get moveable shelves, proper storage boxes and even chairs and tables so the materials could still be accessible for public use and be properly cared for even in its new temporary home.

The concert will be on the 20th day of October 2017, 6:00 o’clock in the evening at the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas building. It is located at the PGH Compound, P. Faura St., Ermita, Manila. It is directly across the Department of Justice building and right beside Robinsons Place Manila.
