Ariana Grande has just made her comeback with “yes, and?” — the lead single from her upcoming studio album! This marks her first release in years, giving us the initial taste of Ariana’s seventh album.

The track “yes, and?” was released on January 12, immediately followed by its official music video. Upon first glance, Ariana Grande’s new song subtly draws inspiration from the 80s, with its beat and dance moves reminiscent of Madonna’s ‘Vogue.’ However, upon listening to its lyrics, it becomes evident that it’s much more than a simple homage.

In its first verse, the pop singer seems to be calling for everyone to be more empathetic towards each other. She sings, “In case you haven’t noticed/Well, everybody’s tired/And healin’ from somebody/Or somethin’ we don’t see just right.”
Meanwhile, the lines leading to the chorus up to the chorus itself feel like an invitation to shake off negativity. It goes, “And if you find yourself in a dark situation/Just turn on your light and be like/’Yes, and?’/Say that sh** with your chest, and/Be your own f***in’ best friend.”
Then, it all comes down to the bridge, which addresses the drama surrounding Ariana Grande. The lyrics read, “Don’t comment on my body, do not reply/Your business is yours and mine is mine/Why do you care so much whose **** I ride?/Why?”
While ‘yes, and?’ may sound like a clapback to her critics, Ariana Grande’s new song emerges as an overall timely, relatable, and empowering anthem—a much-needed addition as we usher in a new era this new year!
