FLUSH: Raising Awareness on the Importance of Sanitary Management

Project FLUSH is a community-oriented project which will address the sanitation concerns of Sitio Kabuhuan, Barangay Puray, a rural community in the mountains of Rodriguez (Montalban), Rizal. While the rest of the Rodriguez has evolved into a first-class urban municipality, Sitio Kabuhuan is stuck with two perpetual problems: the practice of open defecation in Puray River and the recurring cases of diarrhea and vomiting among the children of the community. In Project FLUSH, we respond to the needs of the community through construction of sanitary toilet facilities, education of the community on hygiene and sanitation, community organizing, and development of a model for addressing sanitation concerns. This project complements the proposed Community-Led Total Sanitation program of the Municipal Sanitation Office of Rodriguez.

FLUSH: Raising Awareness on the Importance of Sanitary Management

Objectives of the Project

  • To construct low-cost, communal, sanitary toilet facilities in Sitio Kabuhuan
  • To conduct public health lectures on hygiene for children and sanitation for adults
  • To facilitate the formation of a core group on sanitation in Sitio Kabuhuan
  • To organize the community in the formulation of policies on the use and maintenance of toilets
  • To create a model of sanitary facilities provision and community-led total sanitation which can be applied to other communities

Advocacy

Our advocacy is to put into consciousness the role of a clean environment in health and complete well-being; to approach sanitation holistically using technologies, policies, and partnerships; to allow the community to provide for themselves a basic human need which the rest of us have taken for granted; and to enable the community to restore dignity in their daily bodily needs.

Beneficiaries

The residents of Sitio Kabuhuan are the primary beneficiaries of Project FLUSH. It is our hope that our interventions would result in decreased incidence of sanitation-related diseases, decreased economic costs due to illnesses, improved community relations and general well-being of the residents of the sitio.
