FINALLY- BTS is the First K-Pop Group to Win an Award at the Billboard Music Awards!

We’ve known it for years, but now the rest of the world is catching up on the secret: K-pop is one of the best things to happen in music. In the recently held Billboard Music Awards, K-pop group BTS took home the Top Social Artist award, becoming the first K-pop group to be recognized at the annual ceremony.

The Top Social Artist award is a fan-voted category. Justin Bieber took home the crown since the category’s inception in 2011, but BTS changed that with an overwhelming 300 million votes on Twitter. The group beat Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes.

In their acceptance speech, member Rap Monster (Kim Nam-joon) said, “We still cannot believe that we’re standing here on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards. It is so great to see all the artists we admire, and we feel honored to be in this category with all these great artists right in front of us.”

BTS, or Bangtan Boys, is a seven-piece group known for their The Most Beautiful Moment in Life trilogy of albums. Their debut album 2 Cool 4 Skool won the group several New Artist of the Year awards.

BTS is the second Korean artist to win an award at the Billboard Music Awards, following Psy’s win of the Top Streaming Song award in 2013 for “Gangnam Style.”
